Bio

Born November 23rd, 1981, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Bret was the first of three children. After only a short time in Lake Charles, Bret and his family moved to Alexandria, Louisiana, where he spent most of his upbringing. In the summer of his freshman year at Alexandria Senior High, he spent an evening watching his uncle strum an old acoustic guitar. He became so inspired he purchased his first guitar.

It was a lower end Fender, which never stayed in tune. He would stay up each night teaching himself in his mother’s shop. Within a year, he was performing at his school and church. Around his second year, Bret really took interest in finger picking. He would use the rest of his time in Alexandria practicing and creating his very own unique style of picking.

It wasn’t until college that Bret would focus mainly on writing songs. While attending Northwestern St. University, in Natchitoches, Louisiana, Bret met a very talented local singer/songwriter, Glenn Rainey. Glenn and Bret formed a great friendship based on their love and respect for music. It was during these three years that they would form the band, “Drunk by Noon,” and compete almost daily to see who could write the best song. These few years would have a huge impact on Bret’s future in the music world. The small college town left an impression. The memories made, and the lessons learned in that small amount of time, proved to be a goldmine when it came to songwriting.

In 2004, Bret left Natchitoches and moved to Lafayette, Louisiana. Not knowing a single person, he quickly became a regular at all the singer/songwriter joints. One of the venues he frequented, “Bisbano’s Cellar Door”, became his home away from home. It is here that Bret met Shelton Skerrett, who would later become the president of “Right Note Records.” Shelton, a local producer with years of experience, offered his expertise, and “Lonely for Love” was born. Bret’s debut album invites listeners to experience the ups and downs of his own personal, day to day life.
